само няколко типа в pg имат фиксирана дължина - почти всички типове са тип varlena - има динамична дължина. Можете да проверявате заявки като

 postgres=# select typlen from pg_type where oid = 'int'::regtype::oid;
  typlen 
 --------
       4
 (1 row)


 postgres=# select attlen from pg_attribute where attrelid = 'x'::regclass and attname = 'a';
  attlen 
 --------
       4
 (1 row)

Когато резултатът не е -1, тогава типът няма фиксирана дължина

за типове varlena използвайте функцията pg_column_size:
